Lafayette incorporated as a city in 1968 and covers about 15 square miles between Orinda and Walnut Creek. Danville incorporated as a town in 1982. Both contract with the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office for police services, so each has its own police department staffed through the Sheriff.
