Danville is a Contra Costa County town in the San Ramon Valley, with a historic downtown, Mount Diablo on its eastern edge and the Iron Horse Trail running through its center. Below is what to know about buying in Danville, along with the homes for sale right now.
Danville incorporated in 1982. The California Department of Finance estimates its population at 43,190 as of January 1, 2026. The town covers about 18 square miles of the San Ramon Valley, roughly 30 miles east of San Francisco, with San Ramon to the south and Alamo to the north.
Most commuters use I-680, which runs through town. There is no BART station in Danville; County Connection buses connect Danville with Walnut Creek BART. The Iron Horse Regional Trail, run by the East Bay Regional Park District, crosses downtown on its 32-mile route between Concord and Pleasanton and is popular for walking and cycling.
Historic downtown Danville centers on Hartz and Prospect Avenues, with shops, restaurants and several preserved historic buildings. The Village Theatre on Front Street hosts performances and an art gallery. In summer the town runs Music in the Park on the Town Green, Moonlight Movies and the Fourth of July parade. The town manages more than 160 acres of parks, including Oak Hill Park, Osage Station Park, Hap Magee Ranch Park and Sycamore Valley Park.
For open space, Mount Diablo State Park is reached from the Danville side through its South Gate entrance, and Las Trampas Wilderness Regional Preserve lies to the west.
Blackhawk, east of town, is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County with a Danville mailing address. It is governed by the county, not the Town of Danville, so rules, services and fees can differ from an address inside town limits. Check which jurisdiction a home is in before you compare.
Danville is served by the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. School assignments are address-specific and can change, so use the district's School Site Locator and confirm the current assignment with the district.
